The Beatles Stereo CD Box Set was released in September of ‘09 it immediately became the standard for The Beatles catalog. These remastered versions sound far superior to the old CDs from the late 80s. When comparing these new remasters to the older compact discs it’s like the older CDs are under a pile of wet towels while the new CDs sound warm and clear so that all of the vocals and instrumentation push through the mix instead of being swallowed up by whats around them.

The Beatles in Stereo Remastered CD Box Set isn’t the only box set by The Beatles that came out in September 2009 but it has been the biggest seller because it can be appreciated by the biggest set of fans. The Beatles Mono Box Set is excellent too but it appeals mostly to purists who want to listen to the original mono mixes (because that’s how most fans in the 1960s heard this music) than to the average classic rock fan. While I will agree with the “purists” that there are some songs that sound better in mono than in stereo (particularly many of the pre 1968 songs in my opinion) all things considered I think the stereo CD set does sound better.

The great thing about The Beatles Remastered Stereo Box Set is that it lets you to buy The Beatles entire 60s catalog with just one order and considering the high quality of almost all of their CDs, it makes the most sense to get al of the albums at one time rather than ordering some and going back for the rest later.

Along with the awesome music included in this set there are some groovy visual parts, the 13 mini documentary (for each studio album) DVD is the most obvious. Along with the documentary DVD there are also extended liner notes for each CD (there is some good info in there, particularly for fans that are new to The Beatles) and some great previously unpublished photos.

I am such a huge fan of The Beatles that I’ve got (or I plan on ordering) The Beatles in Stereo Box Set, The Beatles in Mono Box Set, The Beatles USB, and The Beatles Rock Band Game. But if I had to pick only one of these items, it would be the stereo set because it is the best way to hear their music and of course, it’s the groundbreaking music that made them the most legendary band of all time.

In the late 1980s the music of the most popular band of all time was first made available on CD but unfortunately the digital remastering was done poorly on those CDs and only the stereo versions of their classic albums were released.

The first problem was the digital remastering. Digital mastering in the 1980s was still in it’s infancy. The knowledge and technology on how to best master music digitally for CD has significantly progressed since then. For example mastering in the ’80s was done in 16bit and the mastering for the new Beatles remasters was done in 24bit. This allows for less digital distortion and for more of the original analog tape sound to be captured.

To some the lack of mono mixes was an even bigger problem. Many fans wanted the choice to hear either the mono mixes or the stereo mixes just like fans in the 1960s had. And of course many fans wanted to buy both versions!

With the 2009 remasters, these problems have been solved. Both stereo and mono mixes of The Beatles albums are now available and they are both digitally remastered beautifully in a way that allows their songs to soudn better than ever.

The Beatles in Stereo USB Stick

This USB memory stick is a digital version of the stereo box set. Along with the more well known mp3 files, it also includes super high quality 24bit FLAC files. Along with the obvious audio component, this USB memory stick also contains the visual parts of the box set such as the 13 mini documentaries, the extended liner notes, and the photographs.

This Apple themed USB stick is compatible with both Mac and Windows computers. The mp3s should work with no problems with any mp3 player (whether you own a Zune, an iPod, or a lesser known player.)

The Beatles Remastered Mono Box Set

The box set that has gained the most attention of really big Beatles fans is The Beatles Mono Box Set because it represents the very first time that the original mono mixes of their music have been available on CD.

Many “purist” Beatles fans believe that these mono mixes were really the way the band’s music was originally meant to be listened to and the purists have good reason to believe that. It was the mono mixes that most people listened to back in the 1960s and it was the mono mixes that the band and it’s producers spent the most time perfecting. It really wasn’t until around 1968 that The Beatles started to take their stereo mixes seriously.

Remastered Beatles Stereo Box Set

2009’s most popular Beatles release has been this awesome box set. It’s been an enormous seller and for good reason. It contains The Beatles complete 1962-1970 catalog in high quality remastered stereo. These remastered Beatles songs sound absolutely spectacular (these CDs are definitely far superior to the 1987 mastered Beatles discs you likely own now.)

The biggest improvements in comparison to the old CDs can be heard in the way McCartney’s bass cuts through the mix like never before and Ringo’s drums sound far better than they used to as well. Another obvious improvement is in the way the vocals sound, particularly the clarity of the backing vocals.
